The Gardens: A Distinctive Element of Agricola Samadhi

The Latin concepts of Otium and Negotium represent two essential aspects of life: contemplation and action.
Otium is the time dedicated to being, to reflection and inner peace, while Negotium is the realm of doing, of work and productivity. The garden is the perfect space where these two worlds converge.
The beauty of nature and human labor meet here to create a garden, not for utilitarian purposes, but to provide a space for leisure and contemplation.
The garden is a place for Otium, designed to be enjoyed and appreciated in moments of stillness, where one can simply be, rather than do.

Since the founding of Agricola Samadhi, over the past two decades, more than 3,000 trees have been planted, including olive trees, fruit trees, and ornamental trees. The retreat center is now immersed in vast gardens, offering many shaded areas where guests can find moments of tranquility and connection with nature.

In memories

Anybody can breathe, therefore anyone can practice yoga

This living connection to nature was first established by Annalisa Maniglio Calcagno in the late 1970s. A renowned landscape architect, she designed the initial parts of the gardens at Agricola Samadhi. After winning the chair at the Faculty of Architecture in Garden Arts, she founded the first specialization school in landscape architecture in Italy. She was a pioneer in the field, authoring many books and mentoring generations of garden architects.

Today, the continuation of this project is carried forward by her daughter, Francesca Maniglio, who views her work in the gardens as a tribute to her mother’s legacy.
Every new tree and every corner of the garden reflects that deep connection, ensuring that her mother’s vision lives on in the beauty and harmony ciof the natural space.
